Long reserved for churches, the Catholic rite of confession is increasingly being invited into public spaces, particularly during major pilgrimages. In Chartres , a high place of Marian spirituality in France, priests hear the faithful in the open air, in a deliberately exposed but intimate setting.
This displacement of the sacred into the street is not insignificant: it inscribes faith in an embodied, visible practice, and restores the value of anchoring to speech. In these suspended moments, the profane space temporarily becomes a sanctuary—without a bell tower, without a stained-glass window, but with the same interior density.
From an anthropological point of view, public confession without partitions is a fruitful paradox: the extreme visibility of the setting reinforces the invisible nature of the exchange . This type of practice, common today in Catholic renewal movements or in certain countries of Latin America and West Africa, participates in a contemporary reconfiguration of the link between the sacred and the everyday.
