In Chartres, nighttime projections bring the cathedral's sculpted façade back to life, revealing its Gothic figures in vibrant blue light. This illumination is part of the “Chartres en Lumières” tour, a unique annual event in France, where dozens of monuments are brought to life with visual creations every evening from April to December.
The statues photographed here belong to the Royal Portal, one of the masterpieces of early Gothic architecture, dating from the 12th century. The intense blue evokes both the cathedral's iconic stained-glass windows and the spiritual symbolism of this color, associated with the Virgin Mary, omnipresent in Chartres iconography.
Light doesn't just illuminate the stone: it recontextualizes it. By transforming the monument into a contemporary visual scene, this device creates a dialogue between heritage, technology, and emotion. An encounter between the eternity of the sacred and the transience of the image.
