In the shade of the coconut trees, a traditional Creole hut rests, surrounded by slender trunks like so many columns of a tropical temple . In ecology, the canopy refers to the upper layer of the forest, this stratum of the treetops where light barely filters, regulating humidity and climate while sheltering an extraordinary biodiversity.
In Guadeloupe , the canopy takes on the appearance of a nourishing garden: coconut trees , royal palms, mango trees, guava trees and avocado trees form a living roof above the houses, participating in a form of informal climatic architecture . This hut, with its red roof and peripheral gallery, reflects the principles of Creole construction : natural ventilation, adaptation to the relief and dialogue with the environment.
Here, the canopy of the Antilles does not shelter a jaguar or a toucan, but a peaceful human presence , between hammock, rustling of palms, and suspended light.
