In the villages of southern Zanzibar , the harvest of coir (coconut fiber) follows a traditional method that is still little documented. At low tide, women settle on small rocky islets that they use as semi-submerged workstations . There they extract the coconut fibers previously immersed for several weeks in seawater , a soaking phase essential to soften the husk. Manual beating then isolates the long filaments, which are left to dry directly on the beach, before being braided or spun. Formerly used in the manufacture of sails, moorings and Swahili nets , these fibers are today finding a second life in regional and international artisanal circuits. This slow cycle, adapted to the rhythms of the tides , testifies to an island subsistence economy , focused on the transmission of women's knowledge linked to the coast .
