In Yogyakarta, on the island of Java, traditional Javanese dances are embodied in spectacular figures such as the Barong or the Reog Ponorogo , mythological characters with monumental costumes and lion or dragon heads. These figures from dance theater often symbolize the struggle between good and evil, the power of protective spirits or natural forces. The dancers, sometimes in a trance, carry on their shoulders masks weighing several dozen kilos, decorated with feathers, sequins, silk threads and opening animal heads . The parade takes place in the street, punctuated by gamelan percussion and the cheers of the audience. Inherited from animist and Hindu cults, this tradition reflects a religious and cultural syncretism unique to Java.
