Each year, the Chartres Pilgrimage brings together more than 15,000 Catholics, mostly young, who walk the 100 km between Paris and Chartres Cathedral over three days. This event, organized since 1983 by the Notre-Dame de Chrétienté association, is part of a tradition of intensely codified spiritual walking: cassock, banner, Latin mass, bivouac.
This young man is part of a generation that embraces a structured, visible, and ritualized faith. In contrast to a more discreet or individualistic practice, these faithful embrace their religious commitment in the public sphere. This trend has been growing rapidly in recent years, particularly among those under 30.
Elsewhere, customs are often pointed out as archaic or poorly modernized. But France also preserves its own forms of tradition, sometimes very ancient, which coexist with modernity. The cassock on our streets is not a foreign relic: it is the reflection of a very contemporary spiritual choice.
