At the entrance to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Petra , this young Bedouin man embodies a tradition still alive in southern Jordan . A member of the historically semi-nomadic Bedoul tribe, he is one of those who were settled by the authorities in the 1980s. Yet the codes of the desert —hospitality, silence, endurance—remain deeply rooted.
Its garnet red keffiyeh , emblematic of many Arab tribes, has as much a protective function against the sun and sand as an identity value : in Jordan, its color or the way it is tied can indicate regional or tribal origin.
Today, many young Bedouins work in Petra's tourism sector : camel drivers, guides, horsemen, and souvenir sellers. Between their nomadic heritage and economic adaptation, they navigate a hybrid daily life.
Here, archaeology is alive : sculpted cliffs rub shoulders with local families, and traditions are reinvented through contact with visitors.
