In Chefchaouen , in northern Morocco , the alleyways are bathed in this now-iconic blue hue. While this color fascinates visitors, it is not solely decorative. Introduced in the 1930s, probably by Jewish communities settled in the city, blue symbolized spirituality and a reminder of the divine. Other theories suggest that it was a natural mosquito repellent or simply an aesthetic choice to soothe the heat and reflect the light. Today, this blue—sometimes applied several times a year—is maintained by the residents themselves, who help preserve the visual identity of the medina. Chefchaouen has thus become one of the most photographed cities of Moroccan architectural heritage , attracting travelers from around the world in search of authenticity, vibrant colors, and living traditions.
