In the blizzard, a silhouette worthy of a graphic novel. Sculpted coat, spikes of a helmet... Could it be Batman watching over the city frozen by snow? In the thick white of the Quebec winter, this statue takes on the appearance of a gothic superhero. Hood pulled down, crozier raised like a scepter, posture of a solitary watchman... Yet, it is indeed François de Laval , first bishop of Quebec and spiritual architect of New France , who stands there, overlooking the Dufferin Terrace.
Appointed in 1658 by the King of France, this man of faith was no masked vigilante, but his influence was just as significant: the founding of the Séminaire de Québec , the creation of parishes, political clashes with civil authorities... The monument, inaugurated in 1908, embodies a figure of power without weapons but with vision. In the frost and silence, he still watches—between colonial memory , Canadian winter , and frozen architecture.
