In Japan, street signs are not just functional: they are elevated to the status of urban design objects . This one, made of enameled cast iron, indicates a fire hydrant ( shōkasen - 消火栓) and depicts two firefighters in chibi style—an aesthetic derived from manga, characterized by miniature bodies and expressive faces.

Since the 1980s, several Japanese municipalities have launched license plate personalization programs for:

  • Reinforce signage in dense areas ;
  • Promote visual memory , especially in children and the elderly;
  • Reduce vandalism by promoting street furniture as a cultural medium.

Each city has its own plaques, often linked to a local symbol: a festival, a totem animal, a castle, an anime hero. In Tokyo, some plaques commemorate the 1964 Olympic Games, others feature official neighborhood characters ( yuru-chara ).

The kawaii style , far from being decorative, plays a role in public safety communication here. In a country exposed to seismic risks, electrical fires or tsunamis, it is a question of making protective devices visible, almost emotionally. Cuteness then becomes a resilience strategy .
