Lifeline (India, Kerala)

This photograph was taken near Thiruvananthapuram , the capital of the state of Kerala , on the southwest coast of India. It documents a sandbar typical of areas where inland lagoons and the Arabian Sea meet without merging. Fishing boats are pulled ashore here every day, protected by tarpaulins or light roofs stretched over rudimentary wooden structures.

The perfectly clear horizon line, the spaced arrangement of the boats, and the absence of any permanent infrastructure reveal a coastal organization based on mobility , daily adaptation to the tides and tropical climatic conditions . The minimalist composition makes the essential visible: the discreet, but constant, human presence on a moving border between fresh water, salt water and sand.
