In Malindi , on the island of Zanzibar , this artisanal port remains one of the last places in East Africa where traditional dhows are still unloaded by hand , without cranes, docks, or mechanical ramps. Men dive up to their knees in the shallow waters of the Indian Ocean , carrying cargoes of fish, coconuts, or building materials, often right out of the sea. These ancestral maritime gestures , dictated by the tides and collective solidarity, persist in the face of the increasing pressure of modern ferries and industrialized freight. The Malindi shipyard , in the background, symbolizes this coexistence between port modernity and nautical traditions . Here, salt water is at once a tool, a territory, and a memory of a marine lifestyle that resists the logic of automation.
