Sea of Stones, Sea of Exiles (Jordan, Amman)

East of Amman, the Al-Wehdat camp blends into the capital's dense urban sprawl. Created in 1955 to accommodate Palestinian refugees fleeing the 1948 war, it now houses more than 57,000 people registered with UNRWA , covering less than a square kilometer. Between narrow alleys, piled-up concrete, and high-rise buildings, the precariousness erases neither the attachment to the place nor the memory of exile.

Jordan remains one of the most hospitable countries in the world in terms of its population: more than 2.3 million Palestinian refugees are registered on its territory, of which approximately 18% live in official camps . In addition, there are nearly 1.3 million Syrian refugees , as well as Iraqi, Yemeni and Sudanese communities.

In this image, the Jordanian flag dominates a fragmented but vibrant urban landscape. This is the whole ambiguity of the territory: a host nation , without definitive status, which shelters, integrates, and resists.
