In Kyoto , this Japanese mechanical parking lot uses a vertical parking system for cars . Each vehicle is placed on a lifting platform that automatically raises or lowers, optimizing space in dense urban areas. This type of stacked parking appeared in Japan in the 1960s , in response to the lack of space in large cities like Tokyo or Osaka. The driver simply parks his car on a platform: the machine takes care of the rest. Today, these automated parking lots are also found in Europe and South Korea , particularly in city centers where land is limited . Compact, silent and organized, this system embodies rational management of urban space .
