The becak is a traditional Indonesian tricycle , used for passenger transport in urban areas. Initially pedal-powered, then often cobbled together into a motorized version, it is now disappearing from major cities. In Yogyakarta , however, it remains omnipresent, especially around markets and tourist spots.

This artisanal vehicle is a social marker: most drivers are elderly men, excluded from digital economic circuits like Gojek or Grab . The motorized becak, often the result of an unregistered assembly, embodies a form of informal economic resilience , where adaptation takes precedence over conformity. It resists marginalization by remaining visible: colorful, worn, sometimes noisy, but always there.

The coexistence of old transport and modern scooters reflects the rapid social and economic changes in urban Indonesia. Here, the face turned towards the camera , the fixed postures and the parallel gazes sum up two temporalities that intersect without really meeting.
