On the Zanzibar coast, a Maasai woman walks across the reefs exposed at low tide, her child securely strapped to her back. This figure, dressed in brightly colored traditional fabrics, contrasts with the seaweed greens that carpet the marine rocks. While the reefs are usually the domain of seaweed harvesters, the Maasai presence here tells another story: many men and women from the mainland, particularly from inland Tanzania, settle temporarily in Zanzibar to support their families , working as hotel guards, guides, or craft vendors .
The Maasai, traditionally pastoralists, are now adapting to coastal economic dynamics, combining mobility, cultural transmission, and resilience. Far from fixed clichés, this scene reveals a crossroads between tradition and adaptation , between the red earth of the Rift Valley and the salty tides of the Indian Ocean.
