In Japan, lotus-shaped light sculptures are often temporarily installed in temple ponds or public squares, particularly during festivals like Obon or Hanatōro , where light guides the spirits. But some installations, like this one in Kyoto, are part of a lasting contemporary urban design, combining floral art and architectural lighting.
The symbolism of the lotus is strong: in Japanese Buddhism, it embodies spiritual awakening, emerging from muddy water to blossom in clarity. It is also a recurring motif in modern Japanese design, echoed in architecture, gardens, and digital art.
In photography, the green chromatic rendering on a black background evokes the research of the Neo-Tokyo era, where LED lighting is used to recreate an augmented nature. This scene could be part of a reading of bio-urban aesthetics, where the natural object is reprogrammed by the city.
