In Zanzibar, many fish vendors on motorbikes make daily deliveries to inland villages far from the coast and formal markets. This street trade relies on local know-how: woven baskets lined with banana leaves, routes optimized according to the heat, roads, water points, and buyers' habits.
The fish is thus sold without the traditional cold chain, but with a controlled organization: very early morning departures, short supply chains, door-to-door sales or on makeshift stalls. Like this Zanzibari seller on a motorbike , this informal economy plays a key role in the island's food security.
This distribution method—without coolers or technology—embodying a form of sustainable rural logistics and demonstrating the resilience of short supply chains in East Africa.
