On May 4, 2025 , an exceptional storm hit Petra , one of Jordan 's most emblematic archaeological sites. In a matter of minutes, rain mixed with hail transformed the Nabataean city into an otherworldly landscape. The atmosphere was filled with a dense, almost unreal red veil , accentuated by the naturally ochre hues of the sandstone. The site froze in an apocalyptic light, a reminder of its fragility in the face of the increasingly frequent climatic extremes in the Middle East .
In the shade of the trees, a temporary camp hung with red tarpaulins creates a tiny, almost derisory human silhouette against the scale of the elements. That day, Petra's thousand-year-old history collided with rare meteorological violence, revealing the precariousness of heritage treasures in times of climate change .
