Surfing in Bali was introduced in the 1930s by Western visitors, but it wasn't until the 1970s that spots like Kuta , Uluwatu or Padang Padang became world references. At that time, the Balinese did not surf : the sea, perceived as a place of spirits and ancestors , was the object of ritual fear , especially during high tides.

Today, Hindu rituals persist: before certain competitions, priests make offerings to the sea gods to prevent accidents. This gesture, called mecaru , is common on sacred beaches such as Tanah Lot or Sanur .

Bali has more than 130 surf spots , but tourist pressure is leading to accelerated coastal erosion , chronic plastic pollution , and massive concreting of coastal areas, particularly around Seminyak and Canggu . At the same time, local initiatives are promoting access to surfing for young Balinese, particularly through community schools such as ROLE Foundation or Bali Life Surf School , which offer young women new economic opportunities.
