Photograph taken during a peaceful protest in 2017.

In Yogyakarta, the spiritual and intellectual heart of Java, student protests are often marked by a profound internationalist commitment. This young man embodies this link between global struggles and local solidarity: the red keffiyeh evokes anti-colonial struggles as much as cultural identity, while the Palestinian flag, applied to his cheek, becomes an intimate political marker.

In Indonesia, a Muslim-majority country, support for Palestine is not just a matter of foreign policy—it's also a matter of the streets, popular conviction, and generational transmission. Since its independence, Indonesia has systematically made its relations with Israel conditional on full recognition of a Palestinian state. This diplomatic choice resonates in the streets of Yogyakarta, where art and speech are instruments of resistance.

This photograph was selected by the prestigious international gallery 1X.com, which recognizes works for their aesthetic and documentary value.
