Calm in the kingdom of giants (Portugal, Nazaré)

Just a few meters away, the underwater canyon of Nazaré throws up some of the highest waves ever surfed—a unique ocean phenomenon, studied by geophysicists and revered by big wave riders. Yet, on this same fine-sand beach, these traditional Portuguese fishing boats , with their painted hulls and red names, remain motionless, facing the Atlantic , like silent witnesses to an ancestral marine heritage.

In Nazaré, the fishing culture long predates that of extreme surfing. These boats, called “ saveiros ,” are direct descendants of the vessels used for centuries to fish for sardines and cod. Their elongated shape, raised at the front, allowed them to brave strong currents and return to the beach. Today, they embody a precious Portuguese maritime heritage , preserved for collective memory.
