Under a wooden portico engraved with the words “Zanzibar Karibu Beach Resort,” a tourist lies in a hammock, her legs protruding, motionless, facing the sun. A few meters away, three men, accompanied by an ox, dig and extract the wet sand by hand. This juxtaposition is not staged: it reflects a daily reality on the Zanzibari coast, where beachfront hotel zones coexist with local agricultural or mining activities . Manual labor and animal traction remain essential in these spaces where international tourism is transforming uses, without always replacing subsistence practices. The image questions the coexistence of two economies—one based on leisure, the other on subsistence—sharing the same territory.
