Toyama Prefecture, located on the north coast of Honshu Island, is bordered by the Japanese Alps (Hida), whose steep slopes literally plunge towards the Sea of Japan. This brutal contrast between mountainous terrain and coastal industrial zones is typical of this region, historically marked by the exploitation of its resources: wood, copper, cement, and then hydraulic energy.

The scene depicts a foothill landscape , where modern infrastructure —factories, warehouses, power lines—coexist with a still-active agricultural base. This type of landscape is the product of a ribbon-like urbanization, conditioned by the scarce availability of flat land in a region dominated by mountains.

Sea accumulation clouds , visible here as a wall hanging over the Alpine range , are common in Toyama Bay, especially in winter. This atmospheric phenomenon is linked to the reverse foehn effect , causing significant thermal contrasts between sea and mountains, and contributing to the formation of dense snow on the peaks .

Toyama is also known for its sustainable urban planning initiatives, attempting to reconcile industrial zones and the preservation of the natural landscape in a Japan seeking energy reconversion.
