In the UNESCO-listed Wadi Rum desert, this Bedouin encampment sits in a rocky crevice that protects it from the wind and sun. This type of shelter, made of black, striped goat-hair tents —called beit al-sha'ar —is traditionally used by Arab nomads for its weather resistance and ability to regulate temperature.
The scene illustrates the persistence of nomadic lifestyles within a thousand-year-old desert territory, marked by sandstone mountains, tabular plateaus and red dunes. The human presence remains minimal, almost invisible, in harmony with the mineral landscape .
Wadi Rum is also nicknamed "the Valley of the Moon" for its spectacular relief, and has served as a setting for several films, including Lawrence of Arabia and Dune . The maintenance of traditional camps there today coexists with more structured tourism, raising questions about the transmission of nomadic know-how and the transformation of territories.
