In the French overseas departments, falling coconuts are classified as a civil liability risk for local authorities. Some municipalities, particularly in Martinique and Guadeloupe, have been held responsible for accidents occurring on public property. Hence the installation of these homemade, sometimes improvised, road signs, a mixture of folklore and legal prevention.

Les Saintes, or more precisely Terre-de-Haut, blends Creole traditions, coastal fishing, and low-key tourism. The island retains its understated colonial architecture, vibrant agricultural practices, and daily use of the sea: crossings, pot fishing, and transporting light goods. Unlike other, more urbanized Caribbean islands, here, canoe hulls still glide through the mangroves without industrial outboard motors.

The tree in the center—a coconut palm—is also an ambivalent symbol : nurturing, protective, but also dangerous. It represents the ambiguity of tropical paradise. Behind the postcard, a real, lived, regulated space.
