And yet, it is Ermoupoli , capital of the island of Syros , which here raises its neoclassical facades facing the Aegean Sea. Dominated by the twin domes of the Church of Saint Nicholas , the town unfolds its pastel buildings , its pinkish ochre walls and its stone staircases , witnesses to a prosperous past linked to the golden age of Greek maritime trade.
