In Amman's souks, the dolls sold in shop windows are not just souvenirs. They wear embroidered thawbs , traditional garments worn by Jordanian women during ceremonies or in everyday rural life. Each miniature dress reproduces geometric patterns from the art of tatreez , Palestinian and Bedouin embroidery, passed down from mother to daughter for generations.
These dolls become unexpected cultural vectors: they contribute to the promotion of textile heritage in a pop and accessible form. From a globalized toy, we make an object of local anchoring. The contrast between the Western codes of the doll and the Levantine heritage that they embody is also a form of gentle resistance : one that says we can adopt without erasing ourselves.
