Every evening on the beaches of M'Bour, the sand becomes a training ground. Young people perform series of jumps and runs, silhouetted against the light under the palm trees. While this ritual may seem innocuous, it carries a clear intention: to work on physical fitness—especially the glutes—according to strongly asserted local aesthetic standards .

In contemporary Senegalese culture, particularly among women, generous curves are not only valued: they are cultivated. We speak here of “mbindou” , a Wolof term designating full, muscular, harmonious buttocks. An aesthetic where roundness rhymes with strength, health and seduction . In contrast to Western injunctions to thinness, it is a vision of the body anchored in social, community, dance, and sometimes spiritual references.

These exercises—often collective, joyful, and rhythmic—remind us that aesthetics is also political : it expresses what a society celebrates, expects, and admires. And here, we don't wait for Instagram's mirror to sculpt our presence: we jump, we sweat, we shape.
