In the former imperial capital, snow is an event. In Kyoto, it falls only a few days a year, as if the sky were waiting for a favorable alignment to allow it. When it arrives, it transforms everything—even the most ordinary sidewalk becomes a tableau, even the quick passage of a pedestrian becomes a ritual.
This photograph captures a rare form of what the Japanese call 「幽玄」yūgen —a discreet, intangible beauty, a mystery that does not seek to be solved. The blur of the passerby behind the glass roof is not accidental: it is the expression of a porous time , on the border between inside and outside, heat and cold, stillness and movement.
In traditional Japanese aesthetics, this type of contrast is carefully sought. It recalls the concept of 「ma」(間) : a meaningful void, a silence that connects things more than it separates them.
