In Zanzibar , under a makeshift shelter by the ocean, hands bustle tirelessly around the artisanal fish market . Fishermen cut up the day's catch— moray eels, parrotfish, snappers —in a ballet of rapid movements, passed down from generation to generation. The roughly cemented cutting tables become the epicenter of a coastal fish market where both merchandise and the day's news are exchanged. This place is more than a workspace: it is a community hub , anchored in Zanzibar's maritime rituals , where words circulate as freely as the fish. Hand-filleting , the absence of refrigeration, and direct sales at auction bear witness to a living know-how , shaped by the constraints of the climate and the coastline. A raw marine daily life, off the tourist trail, where the local economy follows the tides.
