Spanning 420 m², this monumental fresco does not illustrate a place, but a collective memory . Created in 1999 by the French muralists of CitéCréation , it celebrates the 400 years of history of the city of Quebec through a trompe-l'oeil composition of formidable precision.
But behind the aesthetic prowess lies a true narrative strategy: the painting is not linear, it is layered . Each layer represents an era, each character a force at work in the construction of Quebec's identity. We find Samuel de Champlain, Jacques Cartier, but also Félix Leclerc, Marie de l'Incarnation, Marguerite Bourgeoys and Louis-Joseph Papineau.
The fresco plays with the surrounding architecture to blend founding myth and popular memory . The city's cats, the signs, the potted flowers are all gateways to the present, as if the wall itself refused to be a museum. We don't look at this fresco, we pass through it with our eyes , as if we were turning the pages of a book while standing.
At a time when public space is often thought of in terms of smooth, commercial surfaces, this work challenges verticality to tell what walls still know: that history is also written by hands.
