Levitation (Indonesia, Borobudur)

The scene shows a performer in apparent levitation , a popular practice in the streets of Southeast Asia , particularly in Indonesia . This type of performance relies on a hidden metal structure : a rigid seat integrated into the costume is attached to a central rod anchored to a stable base on the ground. The stick held by the performer , often colorful, is actually an extension of this structure, ensuring the overall stability of the whole.

The illusion is based on perfect stillness and bodily control, simulating elevation through mental force alone. This practice echoes Hindu and Buddhist spiritual figures — ascetics , sadhus , yogis —whose long meditations in motionless postures are associated with elevated states of consciousness. Here, the costume takes up elements of the iconography of the Ramayana : the red makeup and the golden headdress refer to semi-divine figures, heroes or celestial guardians.
