On a beach in Zanzibar, a street vendor balances a tray of karanga (caramelized peanuts) on his head—a traditional African skill that helps distribute the weight while freeing the hands. These street sweets , often enriched with sesame, are typical of the Swahili region, inherited from historical exchanges with India and the Arabian Peninsula . In the background, a ngalawa (traditional canoe) floats above the coral reefs, while a kite surfer crosses the turquoise waters: two worlds, two uses of the sea, between the artisanal coastal economy and international seaside tourism . The beach here becomes a space of cultural crossover , where ancient and modern rhythms overlap.
