In Zanzibar, vervet monkeys are increasingly cohabiting closely with humans, particularly in peri-urban and rural areas of East Africa. This interspecific cohabitation gives rise to behavioral strategies of spatial adjustment , observable in their ability to use human structures (fences, benches, roofs) as extensions of the natural landscape. Their posture reflects a state of relaxed vigilance , typical of species living in hierarchical groups in shared environments. This phenomenon, at the crossroads of ethology and sociology , is called silent co-presence : a way of being together without direct interaction, with mutual respect for distances.
