No zebu (Tanzania, Zanzibar)

In Tanzania, and particularly in rural Zanzibar, animal traction remains a logistical pillar. Harnessed to artisanal carts, these beasts of burden are used to transport agricultural materials such as coconut leaves, wood, or crops. The wooden yoke is hand-carved, tailored to the animal, and secured without nails or metal parts. The use of oxen—and not zebu, which is absent from the archipelago—illustrates a local adaptation: robustness, endurance, and energy autonomy. This silent and resilient mode of transport persists where mechanical power proves unsustainable.
