This type of rammed earth construction—a mixture of raw earth, straw, and water—has been used for centuries in the semi-arid regions of the Moroccan High Atlas . This material, both thermally insulating and inexpensive, helps keep homes cool, despite the extreme differences between day and night. Moroccan vernacular architecture favors indirect light and narrow openings, creating very pronounced plays of light and shadow.
Electricity remains partial or intermittent in many mountain villages, making natural light essential to daily life. Children often grow up between dark interior spaces and bright exteriors, on the border between domestic intimacy and public space . The shadow cast here can be interpreted as a fragment of presence in an environment where silence and slow rhythm structure life.
