This Gothic arch opens onto one of Berlin's historic hearts: the Mitte district, a former Prussian intellectual center that has now become a place of memory and transmission. The arch belongs to the former Academie der Künste , or a university building in the neo-Gothic style, typical of 19th-century Germany, inspired by medieval religious forms to legitimize knowledge through verticality and spirituality.
In the background, we can see the entrance to the Neue Wache , which has become the central memorial of the Federal Republic of Germany for the victims of war and tyranny. This architectural superposition reveals the Berlin palimpsest: here, historical periods (Prussia, Empire, GDR, Federal Republic) overlap over a few meters, in an urban planning made of symbols, ruptures and reinterpretations.
This image suggests a fundamental principle of the city: every passage is a temporal as well as a spatial transition , and Berlin's perspectives do not just align lines – they summon the layers of history.
