The traditional tanneries of Fez , among the oldest in the world still active, perpetuate a centuries-old know-how of tanning leather using entirely manual methods. The artisans work in stone vats filled with natural pigments and sometimes toxic substances.
The process begins with baths of quicklime and pigeon droppings , used to loosen hair and soften the skin. These mixtures are corrosive to the skin and respiratory tract. Artisans sometimes immerse themselves in them up to their waists, without protection. Then come the dye baths: saffron for yellow , poppy for red , henna for black , among others.
The leather is then dried on the roofs or hung on the ochre facades. Despite the arduousness and health risks, this craft continues to be passed down from generation to generation, embodying an essential living heritage of Morocco .
