On a makeshift cart in an alleyway in Stone Town, Zanzibar , freshly caught yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) wait to be cut. With their shiny sides, tapered fins, and impressive size, these iconic predators of the Indian Ocean can weigh over 200 kg. Their flesh is sought after on global markets, particularly for sashimi .
This photograph captures a moment in the value chain of deep-sea fishing: an artisanal moment in a globalized circuit . In Zanzibar, it is often coastal fishermen who provide the link between sea and market, in a context of increasing overfishing and environmental pressure .
The colorful bags, weathered walls, and lively expressions of the vendor embody the raw energy of East African markets—between local tradition and transcontinental economic flows.
