In Christian iconography, stained glass is a story frozen in light, intended to edify the faithful. The one at Hellfest , installed in the festival chapel in Clisson, diverts this ancestral format to infuse it with a devotion of another order: that of metal .
The musician depicted here, adorned with Jack Daniel's and a sacred guitar , evokes Lemmy Kilmister , the legendary figure of Motörhead, often venerated as a pagan saint by fans.
This hybridization of religious art and rock culture is not insignificant. It is part of a very real tradition of “Sacred Rock” : in Europe, several churches have been converted into concert halls, and in Japan, some Buddhist temples organize rituals with metal music to reach younger generations.
Hellfest, by dedicating a space to this stained glass window, questions our need for rituals , collective transcendence , and tutelary figures in a secularized society.
