In Amed , on Bali 's east coast, wearing the black and white sarong —called saput poleng —is more than just a sartorial choice. This checkered fabric, an emblem of balance between opposing forces (good and evil, life and death), is commonly used in Hindu-Balinese religious ceremonies and worn by men during temple rites or community events.
The wall in the background, covered with graffiti with a tattooed face , reveals another facet of contemporary Bali: that of an urban youth who invests public places with imported visual codes, reinterpreted locally. This juxtaposition, visible in Amed , is rare in rural villages still marked by a strict codification of sacred space. The image captures a point of contact between tradition and street art , without staging: a real scene of a Bali that is evolving, far from clichés.
