Seaweed harvest XXIV (Tanzania, Zanzibar)

This farmer's hands tie cuttings of red seaweed (Kappaphycus alvarezii or Eucheuma denticulatum) onto nylon cords stretched between two stakes planted in the sand. Each seaweed is tied manually at regular intervals to promote uniform growth. This precise work, carried out at low tide, allows the cultivation lines to be prepared before immersion. This gesture, repeated every day, is at the heart of the seaweed farming industry in Zanzibar, which is mainly run by women.
