Sykes' monkey V (Tanzania, Zanzibar)

The Sykes' monkey , named after a 19th-century British naturalist, plays a vital role on the island of Zanzibar: by dispersing the seeds of the fruit it eats, it helps regenerate the forest. Opportunistically, it supplements its diet with flowers, snails, and eggs. Local tradition says that a tree entrusted to these monkeys is more likely to produce a new generation than if its fruit simply fell to the ground.
